Over the years, I have worked with many organizations in writing, rewriting and designing their corporate profiles. One issue I had to deal with repeatedly pertains to the inclusion of the organogram of an organization in a marketing-oriented company profile. Is the organogram necessary in a company profile? We shall consider these facts in the following paragraphs.
What is an Organogram?
Foremost, let us consider the purpose of an organogram in an organization. The objective of this document will help determine its relevance in a corporate profile.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the organogram is defined as follows:
“a diagram that shows the structure of an organization and the relationships between the different people, departments, and jobs at different levels within that organization.”
And the purpose of the organogram includes the following:
- Show the responsibilities of the staff and reporting relationships.
- Enables the employees to understand their job designations within an organization.
- Enhances the flow of communication within an organization.
- Allows the leadership to manage an organization effectively.
- Creates a visual snapshot of an organizational structure
Should the Organogram Be in Your Company Profile?
By taking all these objectives into consideration, it is evident that the purpose of an organogram is limited to enhancing the internal operations of an organization. In fact, organizations advise their new employee to study the organizational chart to understand their job designations and the officer to whom they should report. The organogram does not fit in as a part of a marketing document.
However, rather than include the organogram in a company profile, consider adding the profile of your team members. The accomplishments of the key personnel of an organization help add value to the company profile. The Personnel/Team section of the company profile shows the reader the skillsets and competencies within your organization. The impressive resume of the management, team leaders, and consultants can help in boosting the reputation of a startup or new company that does not have many projects to show off. Each resume of the team member should emphasize qualifications, experience, and areas of expertise. As much as possible, try to exclude unrelated aspects of the resume such as hobbies, marital status, and the likes.
How Should You Use an Organogram?
Having established that the organogram is not a necessary component of a marketing company profile, it is an indispensable document that enhances the internal operations of an organization. The Human Resources department designs and updates the organogram and the document should be a part of the business plan and bylaws of an organization.
